Sax Life is a high energy saxophone quartet, and along with bass and drums, performs music from the American song book, as well as jazz standards by Ellington, Monk, Brubeck, and many others, skillfully arranged by Bob Shaut. Bob created Sax Life in 1986 as a vehicle to perform his many compositions and arrangements. It soon became very active in the Hudson Valley, playing in clubs, school concerts, dances and private affairs. For several years, the main core of players included Ron Finck on alto and soprano, Ed Summerlin on tenor, Bob on alto and tenor, and Ed Xiques on baritone, and often performed as a sax quartet. Other players through the years included Ralph Lalama, Pete Yellin and Kenny Berger on saxophones, as well as Mike DeMicco on guitar. With the passing of Finck and Summerlin, as well as a very active teaching career, Bob put the band on hold for several years. Having retired in 2010, Bob has revived the band, featuring himself on alto and soprano, Dan Shaut on alto and tenor, Jim Perry on tenor, and Ed Xiques on the baritone. Strings will be attached with long time bassist Charlie Kniceley adding his musical abilities to the music.
