Joe Giardullo’s Late 20th Century Quartet returns to the Cafe for a night of joyous and dangerous music. Along with drummer Tani Tabbal (James Carter, Roscoe Mitchell, Cassandra Wilson, Geri Allen), Philadelphia bassist Pete Swanson, and guitarist Billy Stein; the quartet plays a sharp and dancing brand of music that spans 50 years of songs. Expect to hear everything from Steve Coleman to Joni Mitchell; Cassandra Wilson to Leonard Bernstein; Don Cherry to Julius Hemphill; Monk, Mingus, Shorter, and Laura Nyro, too.
The last time around, the band filled the house and had smiles on every face, from the first note to the last.
The “Rhythm Matters” theme speaks to the underlying idea in all the music: every song deals with rhythm in a unique and joyous way.
