Nita Steketee was born in the Netherlands and graduated cum laude with a master’s degree from Holland’s Academy of Fine Arts St. Joost. She now lives locally and is a popular yoga teacher and artist.
In this show reality is filtered through the visual language of shape, form, color, light and line to create a composition which may exist with a degree of independence and freedom from visual references in the world. Although many components of nature are found in her work, Steketee’s view is fed by understanding and compassion for all forms and shapes. The subjects, illuminated by this view, are never diminished or deprived of their inherent qualities, but rather are enriched.
Nita has included two friends in the exhibit, Pieter and Abby Heijnen, both local artists living in Olivebridge since 2001. They started working together in 1987, while living in Europe. They find inspiration in nature and in what they see and feel in the world around them. Over the years they have used a wide variety of media in their artworks such as combinations of bronze, ceramics, photography, painting, drawing and found objects. This exhibit includes mixed media paintings on paper with beeswax and framed photographs mounted on aluminum.
