Why is it called Hubert’s Block?
The Hubert’s Block musical is set on a block in the west village, at Cornelia Street. Hubert is trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s for his father, Henry… thinking of ways to block the two different proteins that get tangled in the brain, which can cause Alzheimer’s Disease.
What drives this musical’s music?
The music is jazz and blues, with some Broadway styles weaved inside the melodies. You can hear layers of voices, harmonies, soft isolated moments, as well as three part counterpoint melodies. The lyrics are vivid, bold, and sweep you off your feet.
Written by Rebecca Coupe Franks, a composer, trumpet player and educator. She currently teaches music at SUNY New Paltz, and lives in the town. She is originally from the Bay area in California.
