Isle of Klezbos celebrates the band’s 20th anniversary in 2018! Lately esteemed as “Klezmer goddesses,” the internationally-touring all-gal sextet approaches Yiddish musical traditions with fun-loving irreverence and soulful respect. This powerhouse lineup brings creative chemistry and stratospheric soloing chops, reaching fans onstage from Tribeca to Texas to Tennessee. This electricity is also vividly transmitted on their latest CD Live From Brooklyn… acclaimed by New York Music Daily as “deliriously fun concert recording by the [all]-female, pioneering New York klezmer whirlwind.”
Whether re-grooving a Second Avenue Theater standard, fueling a classic freylekhs dance-floor, or delivering original klezmer reggae and boogaloo, the group’s sound appeals on emotional, virtuosic and kinetic levels; while expanding listeners’ imaginations. As The New Yorker says, Isle of Klezbos “tests the elasticity of the genre.”
The group has been featured from Seattle’s Bumbershoot to CBS Sunday Morning, featuring bandmate alumnae of Juilliard, Eastman, Berklee and Manhattan Schools of Music; who have performed as well with artists from Rufus Wainwright to Natalie Merchant, Hazmat Modine to John Zorn, Seattle Baroque to Beyonce, and Scissor Sisters to The Lascivious Biddies to Jill Sobule.
Klezbos projects have included musical documentary theater: “J. Edgar Klezmer: Songs from My Grandmother’s FBI Files” praised Off-Off Broadway by The New York Times… and The Celluloid Closet of Yiddish Film multi-media cinema history concert replete with unexpected archival subtexts. Not for nothing does New York Magazine call Isle of Klezbos: “Cutting Edge Klezmer.”
