Tim Woods
Tim WoodsTim Woods has been singing and playing acoustic and electric guitar for over 25 years, and has long been a fixture on the southwestern Pennsylvania music scene.

Growing up in a virtual "melting pot" of music - including having older brothers who exposed him to a wide array of styles, including jazz, blues, bluegrass and rock - Tim's appreciation of all music took root at an early age. During his formative years, this appreciation grew into a deep love of the blues of Willie Dixon, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters.

Tim first began performing as a professional with improvisational rock 'n' roll bands - long before the "jamband" genre became as widespread and popular as it is today - playing psychedelic blues and, oftentimes, jamming with local players.

These influences have each shaped his playing and songwriting throughout his career, and today are at the heart of Tim's sound. But it's Tim's unique and truly original style - in which he plays and picks using his thumb - that enables him to distinguish himself by playing both lead and rhythm while interchanging chords and licks.

Martyn Joseph
Martyn JosephAt first glance Martyn Joseph is (just) another gifted singer songwriter. First impressions are there to mislead of course: Joseph's ambition is broader than entertainment, deeper than commerce. Some musicians want to move your feet, some just want to move you: Martyn Joseph wants to move heaven and earth. Somewhere back in the middle distance Martyn Joseph emerged from the pack and we began to notice. For a moment there he might have been a pop-star, certainly a protest-singer, a balladeer now and then, a Celtic rock star before they were in vogue, a folk troubadour and then, just, Martyn Joseph. Darkness on the edge of Cardiff. If he has a reputation onstage as a raconteur, extemporizing lyrics to fit every occasion, his songs have always been infected with a discreet but defiant god bothering, music more interested in the forgotten than the remembered, the way things might be than the way they have become. It is less the ghost of Tom Jones than a Holy Ghost music, an aching and a longing for another way, another place, where you can treasure the questions that have no answers. Depending on where he was at the time, some of these songs have had a fortune spent on colouring them in while others are the second-take line drawings from the home studio or Polaroid's snapped live in the back of beyond.

The Doc Marshalls
The Doc MarshallsLed by Texas-raised Acadian, Nick Beaudoing, Brooklyn's the Doc Marshalls have forged a reputation for wildly energetic live shows. Whether performing gritty honky-tonk, original Americana, or traditional Cajun two-steps played at breakneck speeds, these big city troubadours are determined to make converts of even the most country-shy souls.
Their versatile repertoire has taken them from indie rock clubs in NYC, where roots music is seldom heard, to rural Texas dancehalls and countless festival stages in between. A busy touring schedule has afforded them the opportunity to perform with the likes of Uncle Earl, Carrie Rodriguez, Bobby Bare Jr., the Mammals, and even reggae legend Burning Spear.

"It's a damn shame that a band this good is self-releasing their albums. The Brooklyn-based Marshalls are Americana's greatest unknown band, mixing accordion-heavy Cajun music with Parsons-esque alt-country to create a sound both unique and infectious." --The 9513 (Austin, TX)

"On their second record, 'Honest for Once,' the band moves seamlessly from tear-in-beer honky tonk to Flying Burrito Brothersesque alt-country to raucous Cajun dancehall tunes that make damn near every other country record released in 2008 pale in comparison." --Pop Matters

"Well-executed, frenetic Cajun music that will thrill fans of the genre, as well as the yet to be converted." --New York Magazine

"It's hard to believe that the Doc Marshalls haven't been signed to a record deal, but maybe it's just as well. I don't know what a record label could have done to improve on their second release, 'Honest for Once'." --Freight Train Boogie

Joanne Shaw Taylor
Joanne Shaw TaylorBirmingham, UK-based Joanne Shaw Taylor was discovered at the age 16 by Dave Stewart of The Eurythmics, who remarked on hearing her for the first time: "I have played with all sorts of blues musicians all over the world and last year I heard something I thought I would never hear - a British white girl playing blues guitar so deep and passionately it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end!" Stewart was so impressed he asked Taylor to join his supergroup, D.U.P., to tour Europe in 2002.

Now 23 years old, Taylor has continued to refine her skills as both a singer and guitar player, and the proof of the pudding is in her dynamic new CD, which combines the power of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimi Hendrix with the down-home blues of the Mississippi Delta. The 10 tracks on White Sugar clearly show an artist in total command of her instrument as a force to color both the bold and quiet moments of the songs.

"Working with these guys was totally easy," says Taylor about the sessions. "I knew of them because of their work on the Luther Allison and Jonny Lang albums. They didn't even know the songs until shortly before we started tracking and it was fantastic. They are amazing guys to work with."

"She plays with more attitude and flare than most. Massive potential here. Inspiring." --Guitarist magazine

"Catch her live if you can, then you can say: I was there at the beginning" --Blue Print Magazine

"Joanne IS the new face of the blues" --Blues Matters

Annie Raines and Paul Rishell
Annie Raines and Paul RishellWhen 22-year-old harmonica ace Annie Raines first sat in with 42-year-old country blues guitarist Paul Rishell in a Boston bar in 1992, few in the crowd suspected that they were witnessing the beginning of a musical partnership that would span the next fifteen years and counting. As a working team, Paul and Annie have racked up hundreds of thousands of miles on the road in the U.S. and Europe, collaborated on original songs, and released I Want You To Know (Tone-Cool/Artemis 1996), Moving to the Country (2000), the W.C. Handy Award winner for Acoustic Blues Album of the Year, and Goin' Home (2004), which was nominated for two Handy Awards.

Last October they released their first live album, A Night In Woodstock. It is an eclectic, high-energy set of acoustic and electric originals and classic blues songs.

The live band consists of Paul Rishell on vocals and guitar, Annie Raines on vocals and harmonica, Chris Rival or Troy Gonyea on guitar, Reed Butler on bass, and Billy MacGillivray on drums.

"There must be some physical explanation for the sheer joy they bring to the blues...lots of heat but also plenty of subtle variation under the theme." --Chuck Young, Atlantic Monthly

"W.C. Handy Award-winners Rishell & Raines are rousing interpreters of country blues, the original acoustic style that gave birth to electric blues, R&B, and rock. While their guitar, harmonica, and vocals are roiling, muscular, and masterful, their shows are down home-friendly and fun-loving." --Scott Alarik, Boston Globe

Cindy Cashdollar with Steve James
Cindy Cashdollar with Steve JamesAustin-based Dobro and steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar's career has taken some surprising twists and turns that have led her to work with many of the leading artists in contemporary music including Rod Stewart, Van Morrison, Ryan Adams, Bob Dylan, Asleep at the Wheel, Garrison Keillor, Marcia Ball, Jorma Kaukonen, Leon Redbone, BeauSoliel, Daniel Lanois, Redd Volkaert, and Dave Alvin.

"Equally at home picking a vintage Dobro, an old National resonator guitar, or laying down fat horn voicings on a tripleneck 8-string steel, Cashdollar is a master of bluegrass, gutbucket blues, honky tonk, swampy R&B, and Western Swing." --Frets Magazine

Cindy's unerring ability to perfectly complement a song or step out with a tasteful, imaginative, and exciting solo - and to do it in so many musical genres - has made her one of the most in-demand musicians on the American roots music scene. Her debut CD, Slide Show, features guest artists comprising a Who's Who of the contemporary roots scene.

Deni Bonet
Deni BonetDeni Bonet, a Lilith Fair performing artist, is a singer/songwriter and classically-trained violinist who quit the classical world early in her career because she hated having to wear black and sit still! Deni has either recorded or performed with REM, Sarah McLachlan, Chris Whitley, Cyndi Lauper, Daniel Lanois, Gravity Kills and Robyn Hitchcock amongst many others.

She was an original member of the cast of the nationally syndicated radio show, Mountain Stage, singing and performing in her own right and accompanying guests on the show... anyone from Richard Thompson to the Indigo Girls to Warren Zevon to Allen Toussaint.

Deni's music has been described in the press as like "Sheryl Crow meets the B52s" and like "Debbie Harry fronting the Dave Matthew's Band," although any such comparison is flawed; she is one of the most unique and arresting performers on the live scene today. Her song "Bigger Is Always Better" received massive airplay on WDST.

Melvern Taylor and the Fabulous Meltones
Melvern Taylor and the Fabulous MeltonesMelvern Taylor writes happy songs about miserable people. His instrument of choice is the ukulele. They go together like milk and cookies. He learned to play guitar with an Eagles song book. He started writing songs in the 7th grade. Mostly they were about dead cats or snooty Andover girls. So far Melvern has released 4 records, "Handsome Bastard", "The Spider and the Barfly" , "Fabuloso" and the latest release "Love Songs For Losers". They are all really good. You should buy one or all of them. Melvern and his band play shows quite a bit. If you happen to notice that they are playing near you, you should go check it out. Melvern has played in some other bands over the years but you probably never heard of them so we don't have to talk about that. Slaid Cleaves covered Melvern's song "Working Stiff" on his last record. In 2007 Melvern signed a Publishing Deal with a company called Primary Wave. They are a top notch bunch of cats. Together they make millions of dollars! Did we mention that Melvern lives in Lowell, MA? He also used to date your Mom. He broke it off because she was just too grabby.

The Honey Dewdrops
The Honey DewdropsLaura Wortman and Kagey Parrish are the Honey Dewdrops: an award winning, nationally touring husband and wife folk duet who perform fresh, original songs focusing on vocal harmonies and tight instrumentation. Influenced by traditional Appalachian music as well as contemporary singer-songwriters, the Honey Dewdrops blend old styles with new, creating music that is powerful and heartfelt.

If the Sun Will Shine, their debut record, was released in 2009 to critical acclaim and was #2 for two consecutive months on Folk DJ Radio in 2010. Recorded live and mixed in a 1920's barn, the record is meant to pay homage to their live performances - full of the same energy and emotion the Honey Dewdrops bring to the stage. The album is a collection of songs that Laura and Kagey have written over the past two years, capturing "something haunting, melancholic and all-together charming" (Jeff Royer, Fly Magazine).

The Dewdrops are A Prairie Home Companion's 2008 talent show winners and were finalists in the 2009 Mountain Stage NewSong competition.

"The musical equivalent to a couple that finishes each other's sentences."
- Shawn Underwood, Twangville.com

"I have admired the work of the Honey Dewdrops from the first notes I heard. They capture what is best of old time Appalachian music including the tight harmonies and beautiful melancholy tunes."
- Anne Williams, Host of WNRN's Acoustic Sunrise in Charlottesville, VA

Frank Vignola's Hot Club Trio
Frank Vignola's Hot Club TrioIn celebration of Django Reinhardt's 101th birthday, guitar virtuoso Frank Vignola, a leading proponent of Reinhardt's gypsy jazz style of playing, has assembled a topnotch trio for a searing tribute to one of his earliest musical influences.

Only a musician the caliber of Frank Vignola, an accomplished and influential guitarist in his own right, could dare tackle the monumental task of honoring the centennial of the legendary Django Reinhardt.

"How versatile is Frank Vignola? He's collaborated with Lionel Hampton and Madonna, covers Mozart and Black Sabbath on the same record, and [was] one of Les Paul's favorite guitarists." --The Boston Globe
