Prima Materia is a high-quality literary journal published annually by Bliss Plot Press. It is dedicated exclusively to showcasing the many fine authors, known and unknown, who live in our midst here in the Hudson Valley. This exciting spoken-word event will feature writers reading their own work selected from the new issue, Prima Materia Volume 4, "Speeding Through the Night," a 182-page book of powerful fiction, poetry, and memoirs.
Featured readers: Duff Allen, Edward M. Cohen, Steven Lewis, and Jo Salas.
Duff Allen holds a BA from Middlebury College and an MFA from Bard College. His work has appeared previously in Prima Materia. Currently, he is seeking publication of three completed novels. Two of these are It's All Coming Home, narrated by Egbert Starr, a womanizing 5'2" hunchback seeking self-realization in all the wrong places; and Crucficying the Christ Within, a big-hearted comedy narrated in broken English by Yonni Jackson, an alcoholic but enlightened New Age guru.
Edward M. Cohen is making his second appearance in Prima Materia. He has published over thirty stories in other literary journals as well as a novel, $250,000, and four books of nonfiction. He is also a playwright who is currently writing a musical, Here On This Hill. He lives in West Park, NY.
Steven Lewis is a Mentor at SUNY-Empire State College and an active freelance writer. His publication list ranges from The Washington Post and The New York Times Magazine to a biblically long list of parenting magazines (he has seven kids). He also writes "Gravy," a regular column, for Pulse. His recent books are Zen and the Art of Fatherhood (Dutton), The ABCs of Real Family Values (Plume) and the Complete Guide for the Anxious Groom (Career Press). Forthcoming are Fear and Loathing of Boca Raton (Quill Driver Press/non-fiction), A Month on a Barrier Island (Millrock/poetry) and a short story, "Mision San Pablo," to be featured in West, the L.A. Times Sunday Magazine.
Jo Salas is a New Zealand-born writer of fiction and nonfiction. Her book Improvising Real Life: Personal Story in Playback Theatre has been published in five languages. "Ice" is her second published short story. Another story, "Lepista Nuda," will appear in the winter issue of Alimentum.
